What does a school counselor do?
So what does a school counselor do anyways?
Elementary school counselors are responsible for implementing a comprehensive school counseling program to enhance and increase student achievement. Meeting the needs of the students here at Sabine Elementary is very important. As the school counselor, I strive to organize the resources necessary to ensure the success of all students. Utilizing my experience as a classroom teacher, I plan and teach character education lessons on a variety of topics which include character traits and social skills. Helping students to learn how to make friends, get along with others, how to understand & follow rules, and how to solve small problems are just a few topics that are included in some of the lessons. Being a good citizen is emphasized in all lessons and students are recognized for citizenship throughout the year.
Other areas in which I assist students at Sabine Elementary include:
- Providing services such as small group & individual counseling
- Helping teachers and parents with referrals to specialized services should they be needed
- Serving as a consultant and coordinating state testing programs
- Talking to students when they have problems and operating under ethical guidelines with respect to confidentiality
Counseling services are available to all students. Please feel free to contact me if you have a concern or a question. I am looking forward to a fantastic year of learning here at Sabine Elementary.
